We Have An Idea!!!

So today in class I met up with my partner, the amazing Taylor LaRocca (yes we have the same first name), and we came up with an amazing idea for our project! We have decided to go with the horror genre because while we were in class, we watched a couple more film opening examples and were super impressed with the horror examples. Taylor and I sat down with each other and began to brainstorm unique horror ideas and then all of the sudden her eyes lit up and it was like I could see a light bulb go off above her head, Taylor got really excited and explained to me that we should make a film opening about a day in the life of a serial killer. I loved her idea and told her that we should definitely do it, we were talking about how we should have the opening begin with the killer going through his/her morning routine and there will be little clues all throughout their routine to show the audience that they're a killer. For example, I think we should have a scene where the killer opens their medicine cabinet and it's filled with tons of pill bottles, along with a pair of bloody scissors. I think there's a lot of ways to get creative with this idea and I'm super excited to plan it out.

While we were discussing our idea I realized that there's an amazing title sequence that we could reference, which is the opening sequence of the show Dexter. Below is the opening sequence. This opening sequence is such a good reference because it gives us ideas on how we could subtly sneak in the little details that show that our main character is a serial killer. The sequence alludes to Dexter being a killer by showing blood and meat, I really enjoy those little hints.

I also want to use really unique and complex angles to show the dark nature of our film opening. I think we're going to try and use a lot of dutch angles and definitely a lot of close ups to show the little hints. Taylor and I were talking about how the amazing TV show, Breaking Bad, has many cool angles that we could use for reference. Below is a video that shows some of the Breaking Bad's unique camera work.

Genres

Okay so I still don't have a fully developed idea for my film opening, but I think it would be smart to research about a couple of genres that I'm interested in. I've always loved horror movies and dark comedies so I'm definitely gonna consider those genres.

Comedy

Comedy films have been around for a very long time and it is one of the oldest genres. It was easy to make comedy films when the film industry was new because sound wasn't really necessary, people could just make exaggerated movements and it would be considered comedy; this is why most silent films were comedies. Comedy can expand to many target audiences due to the different categories of comedy; a common category for adults is dark comedy, which is a comedy that makes light of a tragic or heavy subject matter. Nowadays, comedy films mostly rely on physical comedy or just plain old jokes. One of the most well known comedy films, Step Brothers, has made over $100 million and it's known to be a "cult classic" film, due to how popular it has become. Comedy films tend to gross a lot of money at the box office

Horror

The horror genre is a type of genre that relies on scaring the audience and it tries to get a strong reaction out of viewers. The horror genre is one of the most oldest and basic film genres, many horror films were produced from 1910 to 1920. One of the oldest horror films is Frankenstein, a monster who is brought to life by a "mad" scientist; it's one of the most well known horror films. A more recent horror film that is extremely popular and has a cult following is a film called Scream, this film is considered to be one of the most iconic horror films ever made and it is the highest-grossing slasher film in the United States. Horror films are considered to be one of the best films to make because they tend to make a lot of cash and they're pretty inexpensive to make.

Introduction and Ideas

Hello to whoever's reading this; my name is Taylor and this is my first post on my blog! I've never really had a blog before, (unless you count Tumblr as a blog), but I'm really excited to have one and I can't wait to share all of my ideas on here!

Okay, so I'm actually very nervous about this project because I want it to be really good and I want to correctly use all of my film production skills that I've learned so far. I decided to do the film opening because I love film and TV shows so so much! I really don't think anything beats the feeling of finding a good movie or TV show and getting really invested in it. I'm a type of person who always has to have something to obsess over and I tend to become a hardcore fan over TV shows or movies that I really like. Right now my current obsession is a little odd, I'm currently invested in a TV show called It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, it's a dark comedy about five horrible people who own a bar together and get into crazy schemes; the show is super successful and I just think it's super creative and hilarious. Anyways, this show honestly inspires me to create unique ideas, but I'm going to talk about my inspirations in a later post.

So far I don't really have many ideas for my film opening, but I think I want to do something in the horror or comedy genre. I love dark humor and I also really enjoy horror films, so I think my partner and I are going to try and come up with horror ideas. Anyways, I hope you have a fun time on this journey with me!
